Grape seed extract is a concentrated source of powerful antioxidants and anti-inflammatory agents. The compounds in grape seed extract that have such a powerful healing effect are called proanthocyanidines, a type of plant flavonoid. They are able to lower cholesterol, fight cancer, protect heart health, strengthen blood vessels, and prevent gum disease, all without the toxic effect of drugs. In addition, it can assist calcium in the formation of bone and may be able to increase bone strength. Grape seed proanthocyanidines also appear to have benefits for people with diabetes. These compounds help reduce the high blood sugar levels responsible for the chronic complications of diabetes. In fact, relatively low doses of grape seed proanthocyanidines had effects similar to commonly-used antidiabetic drugs.
Grape seed extract in particular, through its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects, slows the growth of cancer cells and causes cancer cell death. Grape seed extract has the same ability as radiation therapy, immunotherapy, and chemotherapy to specifically target prostate cancer cells for cell death, with no effect on healthy normal cells. However, unlike radiation, immunotherapy, and chemotherapy, grape seed extract is well-tolerated and safe. Many cancer patients take supplements to help prevent colorectal cancer recurrence after surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy. It can also be used as a preventative agent, not just as a treatment for existing cancer.
Grape seed extract has been shown to slow the changes in the brain associated with the development of Alzheimer’s disease and slow the loss of cognitive function. Grape seed extract may also help maintain normal body weight and fight obesity by preventing the changes in fat tissue that are needed to form new fat cells.
Grape seeds are a byproduct of wine making. Traditionally thrown away after the grapes were pressed for juice, the seeds have been found to have numerous health benefits.
