Indole-3-carbinol is a compound found in high levels in cruciferous vegetables (cabbage, radishes, cauliflower, broccoli, brussels sprouts, and daikon). Consumption of cruciferous vegetables has been shown of reduce the risk of estrogen-sensitive breast cancer (about 80% of breast cancer), with higher consumption associated with increased protection.
Indole-3-carbinol alters estrogen signaling to reduce the risk of breast cancer. Estrogens are hormones that are important in the development of female sex characteristics, such as breasts, and are important in regulating the menstrual cycle. Estrogen can also strongly stimulate certain types of breast cancer. In addition, Indole-3-carbinol has been shown to protect against DNA damage caused by carcinogens and reduce tumor growth. It also increases the effectiveness of tamoxifen, a drug used to treat early-stage and metastatic breast cancer.
Indole-3-carbinol is an antioxidant and stimulator of the body’s natural detoxifying enzymes. It has numerous anticancer effects, inhibiting tumor formation and growth, cancer cell proliferation, and stimulating apoptosis (programmed cell death). Indole-3-carbinol has also shown promise in preventing the development of cervical, prostate, endometrial, and skin cancer.
