Noni
This ingredient can be found in: Pop A Purple
Noni is a pungent fruit from a tropical tree related to the coffee tree. It has a long use as a traditional medicine in Polynesia, Tahiti, Southeast Asia, Australia, and Hawaii. Noni fruit exhibits significant antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Traditional uses for noni include treating intestinal disorders, infection, mouth ulcers, and wounds.
Daily consumption of noni juice has also shown protective effects in the brain. The potent antioxidant compounds appear to prevent damage caused by brain ischemia (lack of oxygen to the brain), one type of stroke. Supplementation with the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory juice may also help prevent liver damage from environmental toxins. For example, rats given noni juice before chemical exposure showed reduced liver enzyme activity and inflammatory response, indicating that noni juice protected the liver from chemical toxicity.
Noni also appears to have antidepressant effects. Noni extracts are able to bind GABA (gamma-amino butyric acid) receptors, possibly inducing antianxiety and sedative effects. The GABA neurotransmitter system is a potential target for medications that aim to treat depression and stabilize moods.
