Coral powders obtained from coral reefs are believed to be rich in many nutrients and minerals that have beneficial effects on the human health. However, there are not many studies supporting this belief. On the contrary, coral powders are rich in minerals such as calcium and manganese. The calcium obtained from the coral powders belongs to the class of calcium carbonates.
A study performed to evaluate the absorbability of calcium from coral powder reported better absorbability with coral powder when compared to calcium carbonate tablets. 1 Further studies are required to evaluate the presence of beneficial compounds in coral powder. There is also a concern about the dwindling coral reef that supports a large variety of plants and fish in the sea and plays a vital role in the sea ecology.
