Black pepper is a fruit from a tropical flowering vine that is usually dried and used as a spice. One important quality of black pepper is its ability to increase the bioavailability of other nutrients. By blocking the activity of certain enzymes in the body, black pepper has been shown to increase the absorption of turmeric and green tea extract components when given together in a supplement.
It can greatly enhance absorption of calcium as well as the amino acid methionine. Compounds found in black pepper are more potent antioxidants, with greater radical scavenging activity than vitamin E. In addition, it contains polysaccharides that are potent enhancers of the immune system.
Another component of black pepper, piperine, helps maintain cardiovascular health. Specifically, piperine can inhibit lipids droplets in macrophages, a key step in the formation of plaque formation in atherosclerosis.
