Maltodextrin

Digestive resistant (DR) maltodextrin is a polysaccharide produced from brown rice. Unlike regular maltodextrin, it is not digestible by humans, thus is does not contribute calories or carbohydrates to the diet. This resistance to digestion is the reason DR maltodextrin can help prevent insulin resistance and diabetes by normalizing blood glucose levels when given as a supplement. Diabetes is a growing health concern and supplementation with resistant maltodextrin may be a safe effective way to improve health. In Japan, foods and drinks made with DR maltodextrin have been approved to officially claim health effects as “Foods for Specified Health Uses.”
DR maltodextrin can help restore the proper balance of health-promoting bacteria to potential disease-causing bacteria in the intestine. Beneficial bacteria in the gut are able to use it as a source of energy. Fermentation of digestive resistant maltodextrin by bacteria produces short-chain fatty acids, which lowers the pH in the intestines, further encouraging the growth of beneficial bacteria and inhibiting the growth of pathogenic bacteria. Combined with inulin, daily use of digestive resistant maltodextrin has been shown to improve chronic constipation.
DR maltodextrin also provides anticancer effects. A diet containing product was able to protect the intestinal cells against DNA damage when exposed to a carcinogen.
